PDW 1: Reflexive Writing for Women

Description and design of workshop:

Each of us needs ways to empty the vessels of our lives, distil accumulated experience, and reflect on its meaning. Writing urges reflection and provides an opportunity for personal and professional transformation and renewal, sometimes in provocative ways.

In this workshop a group of women is invited to explore ways to transform idea into word. Participants will gain skills related to the craft of writing, learn practices meant to overcome “writing blocks”, and experience giving and receiving critique in respectful, non-defensive ways intended to improve communication.

Prospective workshop members are invited to bring an idea, experience, dream, or event about which they have wanted to write.  Day One will begin with structured writing practices designed to generate text. These will be will be separated by brief discussions of selected short readings related to craft (voice, point-of-view, genre, audience, etc.), which will be distributed to participants in advance of the workshop. At the end of Day One, each participant will select one piece of writing to develop further for Day Two.

Day Two will consist of exploring strategies for revision, sharing revised copy, and giving and receiving critique in structured sessions that will stress non-defensive listening by experiencing the process of receiving critique without responding. Time will be set aside at the end of Day Two for final writing practice and development of a plan to continue to completion of the essay begun in the workshop sessions.

Who is the workshop for?

  • Professionals interested in translating their experiences into their writing for academic or general audiences.
  • Experienced writers eager to develop their craft further.
  • Any woman interested in exploring her unconscious through writing and critique.
