Dining Possibilities
Melbourne does have an enormous range of restaurants and cuisines on offer. Trying to make a recommendation is a daunting task. Some that we like and have found to be reliable over the years are listed here.
Local ISPSO members and friends will be hosting group bookings for dinner on Monday-Wednesday to their favourite restaurants. Please consider joining them. Details will be available at the registration desk on each day until after the lunch break, when reservations for that night will be confirmed with the various restaurants.
If you'd like a special meal while you are in Melbourne, we would like to suggest you may consider...
- Donovans on the foreshore in St Kilda. A 10 minute taxi ride or 30 mins on the tram from the Langham
- Stokehouse. A Melbourne staple for years and years. A 10 minute taxi ride or 30 mins on the tram from the Langham
- Riva, a 10 minute taxi ride or 30 mins on the tram from the Langham
- Mirka Tolano.
- Ezard (moderately expensive)
- Vue de Monde (very expensive)
- Taxi (expensive)
- Long Grain
Something Different
- Have dinner on a special tram while you take a tour of the suburbs.
Some specialist cuisines.
- Vlados in Richmond. Steak and only steak. Decor stuck in a 70's timewarp, but you will be served a great steak. A 10 minute taxi ride or 20 mins on the tram from the Langham
- Shakahari Vegetarian in Carlton. 20 mins on the tram from the Langham, or 20 mins in a taxi.
Some good value places close to the Langham
- Flora, Indian cuisine. A cafe style eatery in Flinders St opposite the railway station. A couple of minutes walk just across the river from the Langham.
- Cookie (informal Thai)
- Journal Canteen (informal)
- Supper Inn (Chinese very informal)
We'd love your feedback whether you are a local, or a visitor to our fair city. Dining out is, after all, a matter of personal taste. Please leave your comments below.

There are also the Food Courts (plural) that extend for several long blocks on the south side of the Yarra. The establishments range from almost typical food court to exceptional food court, and cover the "waterfront" of ethnic cuisine. Eat in, out on the area in front of the Yarra (weather permitting), take out in the truest sense. If you are going to Melbourne for the Symposium, and not for the restaurant receipts to add to your expense account, you can find breakfast, lunch, and dinner--as well as all the desserts you desire--a short walk from the Symposium site. The everyday eating possibilities along the south bank of the Yarra will delight you. Enjoy, and let your wallet enjoy as well.
