Alternative standards and types of accommodation are available at the following nearby hotels

You'll find more hotels nearby, with cheaper options in the CBD along Flinders St and Spencer St.  We suggest you don't stay in King St in the CBD.

Further afield, you could look at areas like St Kilda, Richmond, South Yarra and Prahran, all an easy and economic tram ride from Southbank. You'll also find bed-and-breakfast style accommodation in these suburbs.

Like many other world cities, Melbourne has hostels ranging from the shared-room $20 per night to the relative luxury of the YWCA's Jasper Hotel and YHA (Youth Hostels Australia) two inner-city properties.

Note: Neither ISPSO nor the Melbourne Annual Meeting Organising Committee endorses any of the hotels referenced here.  We're just providing some starting points for your own searches should you prefer to investigate accommodation in an alternative venue.

If you contact the Langham directly and soon--for the advance purchase rate--the cost before the hidden charges (1.5% surcharge imposed by government when foreign credit cards are used to pay hotel bills)--for a deluxe king, free Internet, and breakfast for two comes to just under AUD 297. The rate negotiated some time ago by the Organizing Committee comes out to AUD 310, plus surcharge. If this is your first trip to Australia, then remeber to incluse the surcharge in your calculations, as well as whatever % fee your credit card imposes for foreign exchange transactions. For Americans, remember that the Chase Visa cards (as well as some other cards, perhaps) for different hotel chains usually offer "no foreign exchange fee." This can save another "hidden" 3+%.
