Annual Meeting
ISPSO 2011 ANNUAL MEETING, MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA, JUNE 13-19.
REGENERATION IN ORGANIZATIONS: Psychoanalytic Perspectives.
The theme of the 2011 Annual Meeting is about regenerative processes in organisations.
Regeneration stands for transformation, building on the past, recovering what is important, evolution and supporting the next generation. This theme captures the perpetual and inevitable necessity to recover life capacities after tragedy and trauma.
Recent years have seen various disturbing events and situations: the sub-prime mortgage scandal and the global financial crisis of 2008-9; increased reporting
(if not incidence) of bullying in the workplace; terrorism and the threats of global climate change; abuses within the Catholic Church and tensions in the organisation of emergency services including the response to bushfires in Victoria in 2009. Organisational and corporate life has moved through recession, downsizing and sometimes loss of spirit, ethics and meaning. Climate change, terrorism and wars have increased the numbers of asylum seekers and dispossessed peoples, putting strains on NGOs, welfare organisations and the world as a whole.
Ideas of hope and regeneration are continuously needed as we move from decline to rebuilding; from loss of spirit to finding new inner resources; from old forms of organisation to the yet unthought but implicate possible.
Psychoanalytic Study
The psychoanalytic study of organisations has much to offer because psychoanalysis is a practice of regeneration. In studying dynamic processes, psychoanalytic approaches influence the inner life of the organisation as it observes, reflects and examines itself. This may occur at the level of individuals, groups, organisations or culture and society. And, this may occur through applied psychoanalytic practice, applied and action research, or through commentary from psychoanalytically informed observers.
